Spiritualism is a belief system or religious practice based on communication with the spirits of the dead, especially through mediums. This communication stands as proof that life is immortal. Spiritualists believe physical death is but a chemical change in which the body is returned to nature while the soul continues the path of life in the spiritual realm.
Communing with Spirit is not a new concept, but Modern Spiritualism first appeared in the United States in the 1840s and spread around the world from there. Some well known Spiritualists include; Arthur Doyle, the Fox Sisters, Emanuel Swedenborg, and many, many, many more.
Although various Spiritualist traditions have their own belief systems, known as Principles, there are some shared concepts:
- There is a God, often referred to as Infinite Intelligence
- The natural world is an expression of said Intelligence
- A belief that the soul continues to exist after the death of the physical body
- The soul learns, grows & expands through all experiences, in the physical world & spiritual world
- Communication with those in the Spirit World is real
- That each of us have personal responsibility for life circumstances
